It is true that at times, the projects that kids may do at school can be quite creative and beautiful. One such elementary school in Indiana has put forward a strong message through a piece of art. Sharon Elementary School, based in Newburg, had its K-5 students work on a rock painting project inspired by the book titled “Only One You,” authored by Linda Kranz. The project aimed to create a long line of painted rocks which were to be displayed right outside the entrance of the school.

The Art Teacher

This project was led by Jessica Moyes, who was the art teacher of those students. She had been working on this project for a while now and had been able to reach completion after obtaining a generous grant from a local foundation. She read the book to her students within the class before each one of them began contributing to the project through their own skills.

Only One You

The book is targeted toward children and to inspire them about a character named Adri. Adri is a small little fish who is set to explore the whole ocean on his own. His parents give Adri some very important life lesson they themselves have learned that will help him with his life and journey.

The basic lessons revolved around Adri finding his own way rather than going with the flow and the usual crowd. Advice was also given on always finding new friends and thinking outside of the box. The book also talked about the uniqueness of every individual and that every human being brings something positive with them to contribute to this planet. It mentions how the world can be made a better place through people's contributions.

The Project

Each student painted a rock on their own with their own creativity. The final result was then displayed outside the school entrance in a long line. The result was also shared on the school's Facebook page, where it was shared over 18,000 times. The rocks painted were inspired by the fish in the Only One You book. Approximately 740 students worked on the project and painted rocks, resulting in a beautiful path of colored rocks outside the school.

Jessica Moyes and her class definitely did not have their efforts go to waste as this project was highly successful in delivering a strong message. Other parents and schools were inspired to do similar projects with their children.

Elementary school is a time for children to grow and learn, and such meaningful messages and projects will only align their thought process toward a positive one. This is where they begin to make relations and dive into the difficult world of social situations on their own. Through Adri's story and simple materials, Jessica's students were able to grow a little bit by executing this project.
